Marriage is a sacred institution in Islam, built upon mercy, affection, responsibility, and God-consciousness. Yet many Muslim families today face inadequate preparation for marriage, unrealistic expectations, emotional neglect, poor communication, domestic violence, irresponsible divorce practices, child-custody disputes, and unhealthy post-divorce relationships. This conference responds to those realities through scholarship, reflection, dialogue, and practical recommendations.
From experience to intervention
Since 2018, the Sharia Arbitration Panel in Ogun State, Nigeria has handled cases involving marital disputes, divorce, khulʿ, child custody, maintenance, domestic violence, polygyny and related family disagreements. These experiences have revealed a disturbing trend. Many individuals enter marriage without adequate preparation and without sufficient understanding of the rights, responsibilities, ethics, and realities of married life. The consequences of this marital illiteracy extend beyond the couple and often affect children, extended families, and the wider society
It is against this background that Insight Institute (Mahadul Baseerah), in collaboration with the Sharia Arbitration Panel, proposes the National Conference on Islamic Marital Reform as an intellectual and community-based intervention to promote healthier Muslim homes through education, reflection, dialogue, and practical recommendations.

This keynote address will examine the growing phenomenon of marital illiteracy within contemporary Muslim communities. It will explore how inadequate preparation for marriage, ignorance of marital rights and responsibilities, unrealistic expectations, poor communication, and limited understanding of the objectives of marriage contribute significantly to family instability. The lecture will call for a return to knowledge based marriages rooted in Islamic guidance and informed decision making
Paper 1Reforming Muslim Marriages Through Rights, Responsibilities, and Mutual CompassionSpeaker: Mrs. Siddiqah Lawal, Esq.
This presentation will revisit the Islamic foundations of marriage by examining the mutual rights and obligations of spouses. It will address issues relating to financial maintenance, leadership and partnership, emotional support, communication, obedience within the framework of righteousness, and the spirit of mercy and sacrifice necessary for sustaining healthy marriages. The paper seeks to demonstrate that successful marriages require commitment, responsibility, and compassion from both spouses.
Paper 2Protecting Future Generations: Responsible Parenthood and the Tarbiyah of Children in Times of Family InstabilitySpeaker: Imam Sanni Kay Yusuf
Children are often the silent victims of marital discord and family breakdown. This presentation will examine the impact of toxic homes, separation, and parental conflict on the emotional, spiritual, and psychological wellbeing of children. It will highlight the shared responsibility of both parents in nurturing and protecting their children before, during, and after marital challenges. The paper will propose practical approaches to preserving the tarbiyah and welfare of children amidst family transitions.
Paper 3Marital Conflict, Divorce, and Islamic Ethics: Reflections from Sharia Arbitration PracticeSpeaker: Dr. Afiz Oladimeji Musa
Drawing from years of practical experience in Sharia arbitration, this presentation will discuss the common causes of marital disputes and the lessons emerging from actual cases. Issues such as domestic violence, neglect, irresponsible divorce practices, misuse of khulʿ, child custody conflicts, and post-divorce hostility will be examined. The paper will emphasise that while divorce is a lawful remedy, it must be conducted with justice, dignity, and responsibility, especially where children are involved
